May 21, 2021 (Louisville, Kentucky) – On Saturday, May 29, 2021, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. will ordain Deacons Quan Minh Nguyen and Loi Dinh Pham to the diocesan priesthood for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville. The ordination will take place at 11:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 433 South Fifth Street. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the ordination will be live-streamed. Deacon Quan Minh Nguyen, 32, is a native of the Quynh Luu district in the Nghe An province of Vietnam. One of five children, he is the son of Nguyen Huu Khiem and Bui Thi Huy who live in Vietnam. Deacon Nguyen earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the Hue University of Sciences in Vietnam and a master of divinity in theology from Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Ind. Deacon Nguyen will celebrate his Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday, May 29, 6:00 p.m. at Saint Athanasius Parish in Louisville. After ordination, he will serve as associate pastor of Saint Patrick and Saint Boniface Parishes in Louisville.

Deacon Loi Dinh Pham, 34, is a native of Huong Son, Ha Tinh in Vietnam. One of six children, he is the son of Pham Chi Dong and Tran Thi Ly, who live in Vietnam. Deacon Pham earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Hue College of Foreign Languages in Vietnam and a master of divinity degree from Saint Meinrad Seminary and School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Ind. Deacon Pham will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving on Saturday, May 29, 4:00 p.m. in English and a Mass of Thanksgiving on Sunday, May 30, 10:00 a.m. in Vietnamese, both at Saint John Vianney Parish in Louisville. After ordination, Deacon Pham will serve as the associate pastor of Saint James Parish in Elizabethtown, Ky.

These two men will serve as diocesan priests for the Archdiocese of Louisville. A bishop ordains diocesan priests, also called secular priests, for a particular geographical area called a diocese or archdiocese. Diocesan priests usually serve in parishes, though they also may serve in schools, hospitals, prisons or diocesan offices, depending upon local needs. Diocesan priests ordained for the Archdiocese of Louisville serve in the 24 counties in Central Kentucky that make up the Archdiocese.
