My statement on the appointment of Bishop-elect John Stowe as the third bishop of Lexington.

Statement

I give thanks to God for the wonderful news that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop-elect John Stowe, O.F.M. Conv. as the third Bishop of Lexington.  Bishop-elect Stowe brings a strong spiritual presence, evidenced in his leadership at the Franciscan Shrine in Ohio, and a wealth of pastoral experience, including his service to the Latino community in El Paso, Texas.   It is a joy to welcome him to the Province of Louisville! Bishop Stowe succeeds Bishop Gainer who served the people of God in the Diocese of Lexington with distinction.

I pledge my support and prayers for Bishop-elect Stowe and for the priests, religious, and lay faithful of the Diocese of Lexington. In a special way, I thank Father Robert Nieberding for his generous service as diocesan administrator of the Diocese for this past year.

May Bishop-elect Stowe’s episcopal leadership and service abound in the grace of Jesus Christ! May our Blessed Mother Mary and all the saints intercede for him.

Most Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D.
Archbishop of Louisville
