Carridder’s Story

The Church brought me hope during a difficult time.

After our children finished school and fell in love with long distance, my husband and I decided to move back to Louisville.

We had been living in Southern Indiana for many years. We attended our old parish across the river for some time as it was hard to leave the parish we had been members of for so long. The thought of leaving our old friends and our priest and the activities we were involved in was more than we were ready to give up. We knew, however, that it would be best to find a parish closer to our new home.

Thus, we began to visit churches in Louisville but did not find what we were looking for until we found a parish that had priests who gave great homilies and welcoming parishioners.

Many of these parishioners encouraged us to join when they found we were looking for a parish.

Once we joined the parish, my husband and I attended Mass every week and sat in the same pew each Sunday. We often were greeted with a hug and welcomed by the same people who had suggested we join in the first place. However, after the first year, we experienced several changes, including declining health and the need for my husband to move into an assisted living home. My husband continued to come to Mass with me but during a period of time, illness prevented him from attending Mass.

One of these Sundays when I sat alone in church waiting for Mass to start and worrying about my husband, I felt a touch on my shoulder.

A lady leaned over and spoke: “How is your husband?” she asked. Her concern touched me, and I told her he was in the hospital. She expressed her sympathy. “I will certainly remember him in my prayers,” she said.

I thanked her, blinking away tears. She may never know how her concern and those few words lightened my spirit and gave me hope.

I have been away from the church for awhile. What do I need to do to come back?

Welcome back! You might begin by coming to any of our Masses within the Archdiocese.  See the links below for a schedule of Mass times and parishes. Many of our parishes have a number of programs for Catholics wanting to return. Make an appointment with a pastor or other pastoral leader at one of our parishes.

Resources for Support

Our faith calls us to realize that we are communal people on a faith journey. We need the support of each other in times of difficulty and transition.  You will find here ministries that seek to respond to families in need of support.
